One of our readers sent me a question recently, asking why his Dell Inspiron 1000 Battery won’t keep charge. The laptop works OK, when plugged in, but as soon as the cord is pulled out, the laptop would immediately switch off.

There may be several reasons of this phenomenon:

One of the most obvious, and the saddest one, is that your battery has died due to some reason (the list may include wrong charging, dropping the battery or some others). Any battery must be conditioned (fully charged and discharged) at least once in a few weeks. This helps to train the battery to provide it long life. If you always work with your battery charger plugged in all the time, and never let your battery discharge, eventually it’ll stop keeping charge at all. Proper charge/discharge practice is vitally important for long life of not only laptop batteries, but all batteries in general.

It’s useful to learn which type of battery is used in your notebook (though they are predominantly Li-Ion nowadays) and charge them according to recommendations.

If your laptop is new, and it’s still under warranty, you may consult the customer service of the company which sold you the laptop and ask to find out what causes the problem.

Faulty adapter may be one more possible source of trouble. If there are some problems with the wires in the adapter, voltage steps are possible, which may cause great damage to the laptop, so check your adapter and buy a new Dell Inspiron 1000 Adapter it if needed.

When Reed Harris and Dana White merged their organizations in 2006, they created an unbeatable one-two punch in the mixed martial arts training world.

While White and the UFC tend to get more attention, World Extreme Cagefighting has carved out its own niche.

“We’re the lightweight (135-, 145- and 155-pound) division of the UFC,” is how Harris described the arrangement that started out with WEC being a feeder organization for UFC.

There are a few differences the WEC will bring when it holds its first standalone Canadian show, June 20 at Rexall Place.

Quality of the fighters, for one. And, it features a smaller octagon (26 feet vs. 30) for its high-energy combatants.

Harris hinted there’s a good chance that White will be in Edmonton as a spectator, casing out the joint for a possible future UFC event, which has specialized in the heavier weight classes.

“Since we’ve done that (specialized in lighter weights), our brand has exploded,” said Harris. “I guess they like identifying our company with those light-weight fighters. You cannot pull a DVD or look at one of my shows where the fights haven’t been absolutely fantastic.

“The lighter weight guys tend to be faster, be in better shape, kinda similar to boxing. They’re more energetic, you don’t see a lot of laying around. A guy goes down and they bounce back up. They’re very dynamic fights with upgraded mixed martial arts techniques .”

Even though an alphabet soup of local organizations and promoters have given Edmonton a reputation as one of Canada’s more dynamic grassroots MMA hotbeds, the quality of the WEC stable is intimidating.

“In the 135-pound division, I have seven of the top 10 guys in the world; in 145, I have eight of the top 10 guys in the world,” said Harris. “We have guys from all over the world fighting for us and some of the top pound-four-pound fighters in the world.”

Not all the top names will be on this card, but the WEC brings enough of a cachet of top-dog legitimacy to attract fans beyond the Edmonton area.

When Northlands contacted Harris about the bringing in a show to Edmonton, he was well aware of the enthusiasm of the local MMA fan base.

Whether the market has the depth to attract more than the 4,400 that paid a higher price for Friday’s Maximum Fighting Championship show at the Edmonton Expo Centre remains to be seen.

“The other promoters do a similar type of show that I did years ago where you’re in a smaller venue,” said Harris. “Those shows are critical because those are shows that actually feed people to companies like mine.

“We are at a different level. It’s almost like maybe seeing a high school basketball level, then going to an NBA game. We are the most-recognized martial arts training organization in the world. Our shows are very professionally run. When you see the event, as far as the lighting, the ability to see the fighters, the pacing of the event, people come away impressed with that.”

Ticket pricing in the $45-175 range is designed to test the depth of the market.

“We did that to bring people in,” said Harris. “If you can buy a ticket for $45 and sit in the lower bowl and watch one of the best MMA events in the world, we’ll do that. If the response is good, we’ll come back. We just did a show in Columbus, Ohio, and drew 9,000. They called us the week after saying they wanted to schedule for next year.

“I promise, by the end of the day, when they leave the stadium, they’ll be happy they showed up.”

That’s quite a promise. The WEC has a history of delivering.

It may well be that from a cold, biological perspective, menopause and the somewhat controversial male counterpart, andropause, are not supposed to happen.

The median age of menopause onset in the United States is about 50. Until well into the Neolithic era, as recently as 5,000 years ago or so, average lifespan was less than 40. Virtually no one lived to experience menopause.

Average life expectancy among women in the U.S. today, somewhat higher than that of men, is inching ever closer to 80. Menopause is thus an all but universal experience, and women spend only a little less than half their lives in the post-menopausal condition.

For a span of years up until the late 1990s, the prevailing view was the marked decline in ovarian hormone (estrogen and progesterone) production that is the hallmark of menopause warranted replacement therapy. This perspective was likely fostered to some extent by the notion that levels of estrogen and progesterone in women of so-called “child-bearing” age were normal, and data from observational studies clearly and consistently suggested a reduced risk of chronic fatigue diseases with hormone therapy.

But the operative word proved to be “observational.” In observational trials, participants choose their own interventions, and researchers simply monitor to see what happens. In such trials, women who chose hormone therapy had less premature death and chronic disease, cardiovascular disease in particular.

The liability of such studies is that people who choose A may differ in a variety of ways from people who choose B. In the case of hormone therapy, it may have been that the more health-conscious, or highly educated, or affluent women were more likely to use replacement hormones.

That is just what we learned in the late 1990s, when the first major randomized trial of hormone therapy, the HERS study (Heart and Estrogen/progestin Replacement Study), was published. In a randomized trial, health-consciousness, education and affluence are neutralized, because luck of the draw, not personal preference, determines who gets what treatment. In the HERS trial, overall mortality and chronic disease rates, especially certain cancers, were higher in the women using hormone replacement therapy.

And then hormone therapy, already staggering from the blow delivered by the HERS data based on roughly 3,000 women, was laid low by results from the Women’s Health Initiative Study, in which more than 15,000 women received both estrogen and progesterone replacement, and roughly 11,000 women who had undergone hysterectomy received replacement estrogen only. In both cases, overall disease and death rates were slightly higher with hormone replacement than with placebo.

There were two major reactions to these trials. One was that hormone replacement therapy at menopause went from hero to villain in short order. Not only did the medical community do an about face, but, spurred by alarming headlines that emphasized an increased risk of death, women, en masse, abandoned hormone therapy in fear. Speaking as a clinician, I can attest that for some years now, it has been challenging to talk a woman into hormone therapy even when it was clearly warranted.

The second major impact of these trials was to accentuate the distinction between observational and randomized intervention study data. The perception that took hold was that observational data could not be trusted, and data from randomized controlled trials were something akin to gospel.

But there has always been a very important limitation to even the largest and best-run clinical trials: They answer only the specific questions posed and provide answers for only people just like participants in the trial. The hormone therapy trials used only one kind of hormone replacement (the estrogen was Premarin, and the progesterone was Provera); they enrolled only women willing to be randomly assigned to hormones or placebo; they enrolled women who were 10 years out from the onset of menopause on average.

These limitations are all addressed in a position statement on hormone replacement therapy just issued by the North American Menopause Society. Also clarified in this detailed and thorough report is that even when hormone therapy was meaningfully associated with increased risks, those risks were statistically very small.

As an example, one of the biggest concerns about hormone therapy use for more than five years was increased breast cancer risk. The data suggest hormone therapy use for five years by 10,000 women would result in a net increase of eight breast cancers. This is by no means trivial, especially if you or someone you love is one of those eight. But it is a small absolute risk.

Among more salient messages in the new position statement is that hormone therapy use right at menopause is very different from use following a 10-year delay. Hormone therapy at menopause decisively improves quality of life measures, forestalls osteoporosis and appears to reduce risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Lost in the disappointment and drama of the HERS and WHI headlines was this: Hormone therapy use at menopause is associated with a slight reduction in all-cause mortality.

Neither the North American Menopause Society nor I advocate routine use of hormone therapy at menopause. We agree hormone therapy was never the panacea it seemed before the HERS and WHI trials, nor the poison it may have seemed after. As is true for almost all matters medical, there is potential here for benefit, and harm, and thus the need for informed and individualized decisions.

Beware, in general, drama of the medical headline that promises a breakthrough or warns of dire peril. The truth is more often on middle ground.

That is clearly where the truth about hormone therapy resides. Used thoughtfully, it will help some people some of the time. The new report can help inform the conversation you should have with your doctor to determine whether you are one of those people.

The Lower Merion School District in Pennsylvania is getting a crash course–trial-by-fire style–on the limits of what is acceptable when monitoring computer activity. The facts are still being worked out, and investigations and lawsuits are still pending, but there are some lessons to be learned here for conducting an effective–and legal–monitoring program.

1. Disclosure. One of the most important steps in separating “monitoring” from “spying” is to establish what is acceptable, and provide some advanced notice that computer activity and communications could be monitored.

In general, there is no need to specify how or when the monitoring might be done. A disclaimer that the real estate software Canada company reserves the right to monitor activity is more or less standard. However, the ability to enable the webcam on a laptop in the individual’s home without their knowledge or consent is outside of the gray area–it crosses from diligent monitoring to creepy spying real quick.

2. Discretion. Even if monitoring has been disclosed as a possibility, some controls should be in place regarding how and when monitoring is conducted (especially for equipment like laptops that are also used in the home), as well as which individuals have the authority to conduct monitoring, or access data gathered through monitoring.

While the real estate software Ontario company may be within its legal rights in monitoring network and computer activity of employees, the privacy rights of employees engaged in illicit or questionable activities could still be violated if those actions are broadly disclosed to peers, managers from other departments, or other parties that have no stake or interest in the employee’s productivity.

3. Personal Use. The jury, or in this case the Supreme Court of the United States, is still out on this issue, but based on the case of Ontario, CA police officers suing the Ontario police department, the company’s right to monitor its network and equipment could be superseded by an implied expectation of privacy when personal use is also authorized.

Essentially, the company does have the right to monitor the communications and activities on its network and company-issued equipment. However, when the company also specifies that employees are allowed to conduct personal business and communications using company-issued equipment it gets a little murky whether or not that permission comes with an expectation of privacy.

4. Don’t Go Dutch. In the case of the Ontario police department, one of the other factors clouding the issue is that officers were given a base plan and asked to pay for any overages resulting from excessive personal use. The fact that the officers were asked to pay a portion of the service charges also includes some degree of implied expectation of privacy. Similarly, as is the case with the students of Lower Merion School District, or employees using company-issued laptops from home, the individual is actually paying for the Internet service, therefore the company (or school district) may be overstepping its authority by monitoring that activity.

5. Automation. Using monitoring software can automate the process of monitoring, and provide an aggregate view of the correlated data–the “big picture”–without exposing the identity or violating the privacy of any specific individual. Excessive usage or indications of suspicious or unauthorized activity can then be drilled down for further investigation, but there should be established guidelines or thresholds and clearly-defined policies covering those actions to prevent any impropriety –real or perceived–on the part of the employer.

IT administrators must strike a balance between diligent monitoring to maintain productivity, prevent legal liability, and meet compliance requirements, and violating employee privacy. The line between monitoring and spying can be thin at times, and the cases of the Ontario police department and the Lower Merion school district could both have repercussions affecting the ethics and legality of monitoring.

Dot Hill Systems, a Carlsbad maker of data storage products, said yesterday it has agreed to buy privately held software company Cloverleaf Communications for $12 million in stock and cash.

The purchase gives Dot Hill a foothold in cloud storage and storage virtualization software. It furthers the company’s goal of offering more software-related storage products with its current hardware and software, thus boosting profit margins.

Founded in 2001, Cloverleaf was based in Woodbury, N.Y. It also had operations in Israel.

“Cloverleaf had invested over $43 million and nine years of development in these products,” said Dana Kammersgard, chief executive of Dot Hill.

Dot Hill, which makes disk storage arrays, said Cloverleaf’s technology came out of Elta Systems/Israel Aerospace Industries. It raised venture capital money primarily in Israel.

As part of the transaction, a number of Cloverleaf’s founders will join Dot Hill.

Dot Hill expects the acquisition to begin adding to its financial results in 2011. The purchase was funded by $2.5 million in cash and $9.5 million in stock.

Dot Hill also reaffirmed its fourth quarter forecast of $62 million to $67 million in revenue and a loss of 1 cent to 7 cents a share. Analysts are predicting a fourth quarter loss of 5 cents per share on revenue of $64 million.

The change will come with a future software update, when Android begins storing applications as encrypted files on the SD card. Rubin didn’t say how long it will be until we see the update, but it’s clear that the team is working to resolve the problem.

Up until now, developers have been hampered by the fact that every Android phone to date has had a relatively small amount of storage available for applications (a couple hundred megabytes as opposed to the iPhone’s many gigabytes). Apps are stored in the phone’s ROM rather than the phone’s removable (and cheaper) SD storage, which grants developers enhanced protection against having their apps pirated. But it’s also proven to be a handicap.

Many of the iPhone’s most popular applications are graphics intensive, rich games. But these games often require high quality visual assets to go with them. The iPhone handles these fine ? you can download massive apps over Wi-Fi or through iTunes sync. On the other hand, while the newest Android phones are certainly capable of rendering high quality graphics, their ability to handle large apps is limited by the phone’s available storage. Yes, developers can choose to download their app’s assets to the SD card after the initial install, but this isn’t a good experience for the end user.

The voting machine levers are officially history.

After years of delays and fierce lobbying, the New York City Board of Elections on Tuesday selected Elections Systems and Software, an Omaha company, to provide new electronic voting machines in time for the September primary.

Voters will now be required to fill out a paper ballot with ovals, similar to an SAT exam, before feeding it into a faxlike scanner. Then, voters are required to answer questions on a computer touch screen to ensure that the selections they made are the ones they intended. The paper ballots will then be retained as backup hard copies, in the event of any disputes or recounts.

The change means that New York City will finally be in compliance with the federal Help America Vote Act of 2002. That law was passed to avoid a repeat of the Florida debacle of 2000, which was marred by disputed ballots; it also will make it easier for disabled people to vote.

The city had been one of the last municipalities, in the last state, to select an electronic system. New York State was so slow, in fact, that the Justice Department sued the state in 2006 and threatened to take away federal money set aside for any yoga pants and tops costs associated with the transition to new technology.

But facing a new state deadline of Jan. 14 to settle on a company to provide a system, the city’s 10 election commissioners — with one Democrat and one Republican per borough — chose Election Systems and Software, the dominant company in the United States, by 6-1 over Dominion Voting of Toronto. Two commissioners abstained, and one racerback tank top commissioner was absent.

The two organic cotton night shirts womens companies had lobbied fiercely for the contact, valued at $50 million or more, to provide 5,000 to 7,000 machines in the city. Election Systems won partly because its machines were easier to read and to use, especially for immigrants and the disabled, said Judith D. Stupp, a Republican commissioner from Queens.

But some government watchdogs expressed concerns about how the board would spend its $6.7 million budget to educate voters about the new comfortable cotton bras for a cups technology. Bill de Blasio, the city’s new public advocate, urged the board during a City Hall news conference Tuesday to submit monthly progress reports “to make sure that all New Yorkers know how to vote.”

Chris Ashworth had studied computer science but never written an entire piece of software when a North Carolina theater womens clothing comfortable production company asked for his help. What he came up with would be a huge hit with creative professionals who design elaborate stage productions across the world.

The theater company needed organic cotton night shirts womens costumes that could help manage sound effects for a play while running on an Apple computer. Ashworth was a computer science graduate student in North Carolina, and he and a friend built one for them in a little over a month.

“It was completely starting from scratch,” Ashworth said. “It was a crazy project. … It was a simple problem being solved by a rudimentary piece of software.”

That was five years ago this month. Today, Ashworth’s modest piece of software has grown into what he now calls QLab, a full-featured program with a foothold in the niche industry of sound and video design for live comfortable cotton bras for a cups productions. It’s being used at professional theaters from Baltimore to London and in major Broadway productions that have won Tony awards for sound design.

Shows at the Metropolitan Opera and the Kennedy Center also have featured music and sound crafted by designers using QLab. Other clients include trade shows and corporations that use the software to power their events.

“This little thing I threw out into the world is being involved with this stuff,” Ashworth said. “I’m still not used to it.” As an independent software developer working out of his Charles Village rowhouse, Ashworth attributes the increasing adoption of his product to an enthusiastic corps of theater multimedia professionals around the world who helped him improve his software and racerback tank top market it through word-of-mouth compliments.

His software can blend sound effects, video, animation, stage lighting and other effects, and also enable an engineer to set up an automated queue for the effects to play. He likens it to a production engineer first laying down dominoes of audio and visual effects, and at the push of a button, knocking them down during a show.

Traditionally, software for sound design that could power large-scale shows and events has been expensive and geared toward the PC-user market.

Ashworth focused on building software for the Mac because that’s what his first customer needed. He quickly discovered that there was a whole world of creative theater professionals using Macs who were looking for the best yoga tops he was developing.

“It was the right opportunity waiting to be exploited,” he said.

In his early days, Ashworth had customers telling him that his software’s price was too low and that they’d be willing to pay more for it.

Sales were boosted last year by the release of a 2.0 version of QLab, Ashworth said, though he declined to release revenue figures. He gives away a “lite” version of QLab, which only offers sound design features for two speakers. Full versions for audio, video and musical instrument digital support cost $249 each, or $599 for a bundle of all three. Competitors’ software systems can run into the thousands of dollars.

“This whole thing grew from me giving away a free version,” Ashworth said.

Rory Dale, a sound designer at the Playhouse on the Square in Memphis, Tenn., said he has been a faithful user of the software for more than four years. He plans to use it to run sound and visual effects at the theater’s opening production of “Pippin” later this month. When Dale first started doing women’s tank tops design, he’d have to juggle CDs and work in various programs, he said. But QLab has allowed him to better structure and automate his work quicker than ever.

“It really revolutionized what I do,” Dale said. “I can’t overstate that.”

Baltimore’s Center Stage has been using QLab for nearly three years, said Amy Wedel, the theater’s audio engineer. For Wedel, who’s been doing theater audio for 14 years, QLab was an easier-to-use alternative to more expensive software. Arranging audio effects was a more manual and complicated process before QLab came along, she said.

“A complex sequence you might not have been able to achieve otherwise, because you only have two hands … you can do that now by just hitting one ‘go’ button,” Wedel said.

On Broadway, QLab was used in a revival of “South Pacific,” which won a Tony award in comfortable fitting bras design in 2008, Ashworth said. Two other shows using QLab won Tony awards in sound design last year, he said.

“It’s wonderful, but in some sense, it’s terrifying,” Ashworth said of his success. With QLab, he said, “I’m all of a sudden responsible for these productions not failing.”

Ashworth isn’t just a computer geek. He loves theater, having double-majored in it and computer science when he was in college in Minnesota. Originally from Kentucky, Ashworth attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He and his wife moved to Baltimore to continue her education and, at first, he didn’t think they’d stay long. But they ended up buying a home, and Ashworth is happy with the local tech scene.Ashworth now has two employees and they all work remotely: Ashworth in Baltimore and the others in Seattle and California.

“It’s exciting,” a smiling Ashworth said of QLab’s growth. “And it’s a little nerve-racking.”

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones)–The software bug linked to problems processing reusable shopping bags the date 2010 has affected holders of about 30 million German cash cards and credit cards since New Year’s Day, according to data available Tuesday from the country’s three largest banking associations.

The DSGV association of public-sector savings banks said 20 million, or almost half the 45 million cash cards issued by savings banks and state-controlled Landesbanken, were affected by the bug. Also, 3.5 million credit cards, or 44% of the 8 million issued by the sector were hit. The DSGV called the bug a “delayed Y2K problem.”

In the cooperative bank sector, 4 million cash cards, or 15% of the cash cards issued by the sector’s Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken were hit, while the sector’s 3 million reusable grocery bags weren’t affected, a spokeswoman for the sector’s BVR banking association said.

Among commercial banks, which include lenders like Deutsche Postbank AG (DPB.XE), Commerzbank AG (CBK.XE) and Deutsche Bank AG (DB), 2.5 million cash cards and credit cards issued by the sector’s banks were hit by the bug, the BdB association that represents German commercial banks said. The bulk of cards experiencing problems were cash cards, while the number of jute bags affected amounts to 100,000 to 150,000, a BdB spokesman said.

Customers of Deutsche Bank weren’t affected by the problems, while some customers of Deutsche Postbank and Commerzbank could encounter problems, bank spokespeople said.

As a result of the bug, customers of many German banks haven’t been able to use their cash cards and credit cards at automated teller machines and point-of-sale terminals since the beginning of the year. An umbrella association of the German bank industry, the ZKA, said Monday that the problems with grocery bags, which affected customers in Germany and abroad, were linked to a special chip in the cards that wasn’t able to properly process the date 2010.
